Governments, customers, and financial markets are setting increasingly ambitious decarbonization targets, including pathways toward 2050 steel decarbonization. At the same time, consumers are demanding more sustainable products and greater transparency.

Meeting these climate goals requires proven technologies that can be deployed globally to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions while maintaining reliability, safety, and economic performance.

Today, MIDREX™ Plants produce over 70 percent of the world’s low-carbon DRI. They provide a solid foundation for near-term emissions reductions. But we want to achieve more. This is why we are highly focused on green steel technology development and the use of hydrogen in the steel industry.

Advancing the future

The MIDREX™ Process offers a proven way. Steel production via the direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (DRI- EAF) route already generates 50 percent less CO₂ emissions compared to the traditional blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF/BOF) method.

Hydrogen in iron and steelmaking

Growing global investment in green hydrogen is reshaping the steel industry.

Hydrogen offers a powerful route to deep emissions reduction, but it also presents challenges related to cost, infrastructure, availability, and regulation. Midrex addresses these realities with flexible, hydrogen-ready technology. Steelmakers can begin with natural gas-based direct reduction and gradually increase hydrogen use as supply and economics evolve. Where conditions allow, plants can transition to fully hydrogen-based ironmaking. Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond technology and into how our plants are designed, operated, and maintained around the world.

Midrex strives to increase the efficiency, productivity and reliability of its processes while reducing their environmental impact. MIDREX Plants are designed to minimize water, noise and air pollution, and to meet applicable World Bank standards, as well as local emissions and environmental standards, regardless of location. Midrex continues to innovate on direct reduction plants that have lower emissions of CO₂, NOx, SOx and particulates.

Safety is non-negotiable at Midrex and a shared responsibility across our organization and partners. Midrex promotes strong safety practices throughout project execution and plant operations through ongoing training, incident reporting, continuous review of procedures, and a culture of accountability designed to prevent injuries and protect everyone involved in our work. Our safety management system is designed to meet or exceed applicable OSHA requirements (1910 & 1926) and is certified to the internationally recognized ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management standard.
