ABOUT MIDREX
Proven, reliable technology built for today’s operations and tomorrow’s requirements
Midrex Technologies, Inc. is the global leader in direct reduction technology for the iron and steel industry.
Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kobe Steel, Ltd.
MIDREX™ Plants produce about 70 percent of the world’s low-CO₂ direct reduced iron (DRI).
With nearly 100 modules built over 20+ countries, Midrex is a central force behind the global transition towards sustainable steel production.
The role of ore-based metallics
Steel production depends on the availability of metallic iron feedstocks, commonly referred to as metallics.
These include recycled steel scrap and ore-based metallics such as pig iron, direct reduced iron (DRI), and hot briquetted iron (HBI). While scrap plays a critical role in steelmaking, its availability is limited. Ferrous scrap is often supplemented with ore-based metallics to maintain consistent chemistry and control residual elements in the furnace charge.
Midrex accounts for more than half of the world's DRI production; it supplies nearly 90 percent% of the world’s HBI.
A globally integrated organization
Midrex Technologies, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Kobe Steel, Ltd., is one of the world’s leading steel and engineering companies.
This relationship strengthens Midrex’s global reach, technical depth, and long-term investment capability. Together, Midrex and Kobe Steel combine technology development, engineering expertise, and operational insight to support the next generation of low-carbon steelmaking worldwide.
Creating a sustainable future
Midrex’s vision, values and purpose reflect our responsibility as an industry leader.
Midrex exists to enable a more sustainable iron and steel industry.
We help steel producers reduce carbon emissions while maintaining reliability, performance and economic viability.
Our vision is grounded in action. It supports practical pathways that allow the industry to transition step by step toward greener iron and steel production on a global scale.
The Midrex difference
Technology is only part of the equation. Discover how Midrex works with clients throughout the life of a plant, helping them navigate changing markets, evolving technologies and decades of operation.
Speeding up the transition to green iron and steel
The steel industry is responsible for about 7–8 percent of global CO₂ emissions, with ironmaking accounting for the largest share. While the world cannot live without steel, it cannot meet global climate goals without changing how steel is produced.
The industry faces a defining challenge: can sustainable steel production be delivered at the scale and speed the world requires?
For more than 55 years, Midrex has been the technology partner behind the world’s most widely deployed DRI plants. Today, direct reduction remains the only proven technology for significantly reducing CO₂ emissions in the ironmaking stage of steel production.
The MIDREX™ Process enables iron and steel producers to transition at their own pace, step by step, from natural gas-based operations to hydrogen-based ironmaking while maintaining productivity, flexibility and long-term plant performance.
Long-term partnerships that reduce risk
Midrex works as a long-term partner to steel producers, not simply as a technology licensor.
Through plant engineering, commissioning, upgrades, and lifecycle support, Midrex helps customers manage technical and commercial risk over decades of operation.
Our commitment to research & development, plant automation and digitalization, reinforce Midrex’s role as a reliable leader in the supply of sustainable iron production solutions.
