MIDREX Flex

Take the proven path to greener steel with Midrex

Transition from natural gas to hydrogen direct reduction at your own pace

MIDREX Flex™ is a direct reduction solution specifically designed to operate on natural gas today while enabling staged increases in hydrogen use over time, up to full hydrogen operation when conditions allow.

This flexible approach, combined with an electric melter, enables steel producers to cut fossil fuels and reduce CO₂ emissions by between 65 percent and 90 percent compared to traditional blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) steelmaking.

Hydrogen-ready today, lower carbon tomorrow.

MIDREX Flex is not a future concept. It is an engineered configuration of the MIDREX™ Process, incorporating defined design provisions to support staged hydrogen integration while maintaining stable operation and product quality. Hydrogen availability, infrastructure, and cost vary widely by region and over time while investment decisions and decarbonization routes must often be defined before long-term energy conditions are fully known.

MIDREX Flex offers the flexibility to transition from natural gas to hydrogen use over time, giving steelmakers and investors the confidence to make risk-free decisions today with the future in mind.

When to choose MIDREX Flex

Energy context

Projects where natural gas is available today, with the ability to introduce hydrogen over time as supply develops.

Decarbonization goal

A phased transition that reduces emissions progressively without locking the plant into a single energy pathway.

Typical project type

New-build or retrofit DRI plants seeking near-term operability with long-term hydrogen readiness built into the base design.
