For more than 55 years, Midrex has designed and supplied large-scale direct reduction plants based on the MIDREX™ Process in every major steelmaking region.

Direct reduction plants are industrial assets designed to perform consistently even as energy systems, feedstocks and regulatory environments change over time. From the earliest design stages, Midrex applies proven process knowledge and future-focused engineering to deliver plants that operate reliably today and can adapt over time.

Scope defined by operational reality

Midrex’s involvement in a direct reduction project is defined early in the design phase and varies from site to site. Typically, this includes core process equipment, supporting systems and the engineering required to integrate them into a functioning plant.

Engineering focuses on how systems perform in operation, not in isolation. Layout, material flow, interfaces with utilities and downstream operations, construction sequencing and access are all considered because they directly affect commissioning, maintenance and long-term operation.

Midrex supplies proprietary equipment critical to plant performance, along with the technical documentation needed for installation and start-up. Close coordination with construction contractors and local partners is essential, particularly where site conditions, regulations or existing infrastructure influence execution.

Project role

Midrex’s role in plant design and supply is shaped by its responsibility for the direct reduction process and the supporting equipment. Midrex is neither the plant owner nor does it act as the overall project contractor, but it is responsible for how the process is transformed into an operating plant. This includes making decisions that affect system interfaces, commissioning and start-up, where design intent must fit with how the plant will be built and operated.

Designed for regional conditions

Design choices that appear minor on paper can have a significant impact once a plant is operating under local constraints. Midrex incorporates regional conditions into plant design from the outset, rather than treating them as secondary limitations.

Factors such as energy availability, raw material characteristics, logistics, regulatory frameworks and construction practices are addressed during design. This results in plant configurations suited to real operating environments rather than standardized solutions applied indiscriminately.

Plants that evolve over time

Once a plant is operational, priorities shift to reliability, throughput, maintenance and incremental improvement. Over time, Midrex operators identify opportunities to address bottlenecks, extend equipment life or improve performance.

Layouts, access points and system boundaries are designed to support inspection, maintenance, and modification during normal operation, enabling improvements to be made with minimal disruption.

Design decisions allow for future changes by including clear interfaces, space allowances, and practical access where possible, reducing risks and enabling plants to adapt without affecting performance.
